Kolkata: The Election Commission on Sunday suspended Kasba Police Station OC Biswajit Debnath — just six days after appointing him — for omitting criminal Sona Pappu from the pre-poll list of history sheeters and active offenders submitted to the poll panel.The omission was treated as a serious lapse, prompting immediate action.The EC also carried out a fresh reshuffle across Kolkata Police, transferring several OCs of key police stations ahead of the elections. There was also a swap between the OCs of Hare Street and Thakurpukur police stations — Lobsang Tsering Bhutia and Rajiv Sahu. Park Street OC Hirak Dalapati and Bijoyganj Bazar OC Ansghuman Roy were moved to the Detective Department, while Chetla OC Amitabha Sarkhel was shifted to STF. Gariahat OC Anjan Sen was transferred to Special Branch.As part of its pre-poll measures, the EC issued directives to state and Kolkata Police, mandating accurate lists of absconding and proclaimed offenders, with OCs held accountable.SDPOs were directed to execute pending non-bailable warrants, prepare such lists, and launch special drives to arrest absconders.Police were also told to map sensitive areas and identify individuals with a history of electoral violence.The commission’s 16-point directive called for completion of probes into past poll-related crimes, execution of pending warrants within 10 days, and preventive steps to maintain law and order.Pappu has been absconding since recent violence in the Kankulia Road area. The ED is probing his alleged role in land grab, extortion and illegal construction rackets. Officials said multiple FIRs, including extortion and criminal intimidation, have been registered against him.Acting on EC directives, a reshuffle was carried out within Kolkata Police. Several inspectors, including OCs, were transferred to specialised units such as the Detective Department, STF and Special Branch.Nilkantha Ray has been posted as Park Street OC, while Raj Kumar Mishra will take charge of Gariahat. Manish Singh has been assigned Bijoyganj Bazar, and Manoj Dutta will head Chetla.An earlier transfer order of traffic officer Prashanta Majumdar was cancelled, allowing him to continue in Gariahat.(With inputs from Dwaipayan Ghosh)
