Srinagar, Aug 27: Police Station Shaheed Gunj has registered a case against five shopkeepers for allegedly obstructing the movement of the general public and vehicular traffic at Jahangir Chowk.

According to officials, Today During a routine patrolling in the Jahangir Chowk area, it was observed that some shopkeepers had placed matting material on the road outside their respective shops. The material was found to be occupying road space and causing obstruction to the smooth movement of pedestrians and vehicles.

Police said that such encroachments and obstructions not only cause inconvenience to the general public but can also create traffic bottlenecks and increase the risk of accidents, particularly at a busy location like Jahangir Chowk.

Taking cognisance of the situation, Police Station Shaheed Gunj registered FIR No. 72/2026 under Section 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the concerned shopkeepers.

The police have initiated an investigation into the matter and are examining the circumstances surrounding the obstruction. Authorities have also reiterated the need for shopkeepers and members of the public to refrain from occupying roads and other public spaces in a manner that affects the free movement of pedestrians and traffic.

The action comes as part of routine efforts to maintain public safety, ensure smooth traffic movement and prevent situations that could potentially lead to accidents in busy commercial areas.
