Mysuru: PM Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed the recent initiative to export Nanjangud bananas (Nanjangud rasabale), Mysuru veelyadele (betel leaves), and Indi lemons to the Maldives.“These products are known for their taste and quality and received the geographical Indication (GI) tag. Today’s farmer seeks quality, but is also increasing quantity, and is making his mark as well,” he stated in his 131st episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat‘.

According to BN Gnanesh, senior scientist and head, genetics and plant breeding, ICAR–JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Suttur, the banana growers will soon be trained in packing the fruit, which is critical during export. “A plan to provide training will be taken up in collaboration with the horticulture department,” he explained.According to Mysuru MP Yaduveer Wadiyar, the PM’s remarks in ‘Mann Ki Baat’, highlighting the export potential of Nanjangud banana and Mysuru betel leaves—two of the region’s most cherished GI products—is recognition at the national level. “It is a matter of immense pride for Mysuru and surrounding farming communities. The growing international demand for these unique agricultural products not only ensures premium price realisation for farmers, but also reinforces the importance of preserving traditional cultivation practices that define their distinct quality and identity,” he said.“The emphasis on exports also aligns with the broader vision of strengthening India’s agricultural exports while safeguarding local biodiversity and cultural legacy,” he said.
