T’puram: The city corporation and Suchitwa Mission have launched a ‘Plastic Arrest’ initiative at Kanakakunnu as part of efforts to control plastic waste during the Onam celebrations.The programme aims to make the Kanakakunnu premises completely free of plastic waste during the festival season. The initiative was inaugurated with a flash mob featuring more than 50 volunteers.Under the programme, visitors carrying plastic bottles, covers and other plastic products will be issued a token sticker at the entrance after paying a refundable deposit of Rs 10. Visitors can claim the full refund when they leave the venue by producing the plastic items carrying the token sticker.Volunteers will be deployed at the venue to assist visitors, explain the system, and create awareness about responsible waste management.The organisers said the initiative is intended to encourage visitors to bring back the plastic products they carry into the venue instead of discarding them in public spaces. The programme is expected to help reduce plastic waste generated during the Onam week celebrations and promote environmentally responsible practices among visitors.
