Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad traffic police on Friday crushed as many as 399 modified exhausts that were illegally equipped to a particular make of motorcycles.The police used a bulldozer to crush these devices in Sangvi as part of a major crackdown intended to send a warning to users.Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Vivek Patil of the Pimpri Chinchwad police said that the traffic branch conducted a special drive against riders using modified exhausts on their motorcycles. The police had received several complaints against motorists who remove company-fitted silencers and install modified exhausts on their motorcycles to create a loud noise while riding through residential lanes. “During the special drive, we confiscated 368 modified exhausts,” Patil said.The officer said that between Jan and Feb 26 this year, the Pimpri Chinchwad traffic police have filed cases against 1,853 motorcycle riders and issued challans worth Rs18.53 lakh to them. Last year, the police took action against 14,512 motorcyclists and challaned them for Rs1.44 crore. “On Thursday, we destroyed 399 seized exhausts. We will continue our action against such drivers,” Patil said.
