Chandigarh: PGIMER has renamed its department of orthopaedics as the department of orthopaedic surgery to reflect the contemporary identity, academic training, and comprehensive surgical scope of the specialty. The update aligns the department’s name with its postgraduate qualification, master of surgery (MS) in orthopaedic surgery, resolving a long-standing mismatch between the degree awarded and the professional identity of its specialists. The revised nomenclature mirrors modern orthopaedic practice, which has expanded beyond basic musculoskeletal care into complex surgical domains including joint replacements, trauma, spine, sports medicine, paediatric orthopaedics, oncology, deformity correction, and revision procedures.By adopting this title, PGIMER aligns with global standards followed by leading international institutions such as Johns Hopkins Medicine and Mayo Clinic, while reflecting technological advances like robotic-assisted surgery, navigation systems, and minimally invasive techniques.“The change is a natural recognition of the specialty’s true identity, bringing the professional title, postgraduate degree, and departmental brand into proper alignment,” said Dr Vijay G Goni, head of the department of orthopaedic surgery.
