New Delhi: For days, visitors at a hospital in Dwarka would enter to meet their loved ones only to return and find their bags, mobile phones and medical documents missing. Police investigating the thefts eventually traced the accused to an unlikely suspect — a relative of a patient admitted to the hospital. The accused, identified as Aman (25), was arrested after police analysed CCTV footage and stepped up surveillance in and around the hospital following repeated complaints of theft.According to police, Aman was familiar with the hospital as his grandmother had earlier undergone treatment there. During his visits, he allegedly observed that relatives of patients admitted to the ICU often left their belongings unattended outside while meeting them.“Taking advantage of his familiarity with the hospital’s layout, entry and exit points, and the procedures followed by visitors, the accused allegedly stole bags and other items belonging to patients’ relatives and visitors. To conceal his identity and avoid detection, he wore a face mask while carrying out the thefts,” said DCP Rohit Rajbir Singh.Police said the accused was identified through CCTV footage and apprehended during the investigation. A stolen mobile phone was recovered from his possession.During interrogation, Aman allegedly admitted to his involvement in the thefts, police said.Further searches led to the recovery of two mobile phones, Rs 5,100 in cash, a bag containing medical documents, a pair of earbuds and several cards.Police said Aman has previously been involved in three criminal cases. Further investigation is underway.
