Guwahati: Veteran BJP leader Bijoya Chakravarty (87), who joined the party in 1993 and represented the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency three times, said the party is above individual interests and expressed confidence that BJP will once again form govt in the state.Chakravarty made the statement while referring to her daughter, Suman Haripriya, a sitting MLA from Hajo constituency that ceased to exist after the 2023 delimitation, who was denied a ticket in this election.“She may be my daughter, but she is a party worker. BJP’s system is different. Many aspirants may have the merit to secure a ticket, but only one person can be chosen per constituency. You may miss out despite having the merit,” Chakravarty added.Speaking to the media after inaugurating the election office of BJP’s New Guwahati candidate Diplu Ranjan Sarmah at Hengerabari, Chakravarty said the party would win the maximum number of seats.“The development carried out across the state over the last 10 years under the BJP-led govt leaves people with no alternative,” she added.Chakravarty joined the BJP in 1993. She served as the Lok Sabha MP from Gauhati constituency from 1999 to 2004 and from 2009 to 2019.
