Margao: The Shree Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math on Wednesday inaugurated Jeevottam Vidyapeetham, a new centre for Vedic learning, reviving a long-standing tradition of Sanskrit and Vedic education at the nearly 550-year-old institution. The inauguration was held on the occasion of Nija Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami in the presence of Mathadhipati Vidyadhish Teerth Sripad Vader Swami. The institution traces its origins to the Gurukul system. In 1953, the then Mathadhipati Dwarakanath Teerth Swami established the Indirakant Teerth Sanskrit Pathashala at Vyasashram in Bicholim. The school was later shifted to Venkatapur in Karnataka and subsequently to Partagal in 1972, where it was renamed Jeevottam Vaidik Sanskrit Pathashala. Over the years, it trained more than 500 scholars before admissions ceased in 2016 amid declining interest in traditional studies. The Vidyapeetham will offer a five-year programme in Sanskrit, Vedas, Karmang and Jyotish, while a 10-year course will additionally cover Nyaya, Vyakaran and Vedant.
