Silchar: Police on Saturday busted a child trafficking racket in Cachar and rescued a two-and-a-half-year-old boy from being allegedly sold off for Rs 55,000, a police officer said, adding that the child’s parents were among the six individuals who were arrested during the raid.According to the officer, a team from Dholai police station, based on a tip-off from local residents, raided a rented house at Berenga part III on Saturday night and rescued the child before he could be sold off. Three men and three women were arrested, while the alleged kingpin of the racket, Bahar Uddin, fled and remains absconding.The accused have been identified as the child’s parents, Rajmul Ali and Rosna Begum, residents of French Nagar forest village in Lailapur, under Dholai police station; Sultana Begum Laskar of Jhanjharbali in Sonai; her brothers, Nabidul Islam Laskar alias Babu and Nurul Islam Laskar; and an alleged intermediary Swapna Begum Laskar.

Swapna, a native of Tengakhouri, under Kachudaram police station, was staying at the rented house where the raid was conducted.Police said Sultana, who does have a child, had allegedly approached Swapna and her husband, Bahar, to arrange for a child. The couple then allegedly got in touch with Rajmul and Rosna, who agreed after negotiations to sell their youngest son for Rs 55,000.A preliminary inquiry has found that Rajmul and Rosna have had four children and had allegedly planned to sell their youngest son.Investigators are also probing whether Swapna and Bahar are linked to a wider child-trafficking or illegal child sale network operating in the region.The six accused were produced before a local court and have been remanded in judicial custody. The rescued child has been placed in a child protection home, under the care of district child welfare authorities.
