Bettiah: Purnia MP Pappu Yadav on Tuesday visited flood-affected areas of Bagaha in West Champaran and inspected the damaged Champaran embankment at Khairtwa in Bagaha-1 block. The embankment has breached at three places, triggering flooding in adjoining areas.Yadav met affected residents and distributed relief material and financial assistance among flood-hit families.Questioning the govt and departmental arrangements, Yadav alleged crores of rupees were spent every year on anti-erosion and flood-fighting works, yet the embankment remained vulnerable. He demanded identification and action against engineers and officials responsible for the breaches.“The Champaran embankment has breached twice in two years,” Yadav said, referring to breaches reported in 2024 and 2026. He said the repeated breaches had worsened problems for people in Bagaha and adjoining areas, where floods regularly damage crops and cause economic losses.Yadav demanded a high-level inquiry into the breaches and sought guide bunds and spurs to strengthen the embankment and a permanent solution to silt accumulation in the river.He also sought stronger relief measures, including boats, medical facilities and community kitchens, besides declaring Bagaha and Valmikinagar a national disaster area. He demanded a five-year loan waiver for flood-affected farmers and adequate compensation for crop losses.
