Dibrugarh: Stray dogs on the Dibrugarh University campus received a protective shield against rabies on Sunday, with more than 70 vaccinated campuswide.The drive was organised by NGO Animal Welfare People (AWP), Dibrugarh, in collaboration with the veterinary department to curb rabies and promote animal welfare.Volunteers, veterinary officials and university students worked throughout the day to identify and vaccinate dogs at DU Haat, residential quarters, hostels, administrative offices and surrounding areas. Many of the animals frequent the university’s academic and residential zones.Organisers said the drive was part of an ongoing initiative to protect the university community amid a rise in the campus stray dog population in recent years.

“We aim to create a safer coexistence between the animals and the people living and working here. Rabies remains a serious public health concern, and timely vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent its spread,” said a representative of Animal Welfare People.The vaccination drive will continue in phases and cover areas around the university that were missed on Sunday, organisers said.They urged students and residents to report unvaccinated or injured stray dogs to help ensure wider coverage in the coming weeks.
