SANGRUR: Over 70 people, including women and children, fell ill after consuming food at a wedding ceremony in Moonak area of Sangrur district, officials said on Wednesday.The affected people were admitted to both government and private hospitals, where they are currently undergoing treatment.Punjab cabinet minister Barinder Kumar Goyal visited the Civil Hospital in Moonak and reviewed the medical arrangements for the patients.He met those admitted and enquired about their health condition, directing officials to ensure uninterrupted medical care and prompt treatment for all affected persons.Goyal instructed health and administrative officials to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of the situation until all patients recover fully.Following his directions, teams from the health department and district administration reached hospitals to supervise treatment and ensure proper medical facilities.Medical response was stepped up, with doctors from different towns called in for specialised care. Some patients were also referred to Sangrur for advanced treatment.Officials said around 72 people had been admitted after the suspected food poisoning incident at the wedding function.Medical teams from Kohrian, Sangrur, Bhawanigarh and Lehragaga are involved in treatment, while a specialised team from Patiala is also being sent to Moonak Hospital.The Civil surgeon, Sangrur is personally monitoring the situation, and the Director of Health has also been briefed to ensure there are no gaps in treatment.Authorities said no negligence would be tolerated in providing medical care. Three ambulances have been kept on standby for emergencies.Patients undergoing treatment expressed satisfaction with the medical arrangements, officials added.Goyal also urged the central government to introduce strict laws against food adulteration, particularly in milk and other food products, to prevent such incidents in the future.The Punjab government has said the matter is being taken seriously and appropriate action will follow.
