Princess Diana’s 1995 BBC Panorama interview remains one of the most controversial television interviews involving the British royal family. Years later, Prince Harry said the circumstances surrounding the interview had ultimately contributed to his mother losing her life.
Diana sat down with journalist Martin Bashir for the BBC programme in 1995, three years after she and then-Prince Charles separated. During the interview, she spoke openly about her troubled marriage, her relationship with the royal family and her struggles with an eating disorder.
She also addressed Charles’ relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, who is now Queen Camilla.
“There were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” Diana famously said.
The interview caused a huge stir at the time. It also became even more controversial years later, when an independent inquiry found that Bashir had used “deceitful methods” to persuade Diana to take part.
