Bengaluru: OpenAI has promoted Indian-origin technology executive Uday Ruddarraju as chief technology officer for compute, a year after he joined the ChatGPT maker from Elon Musk’s xAI.Ruddarraju said OpenAI’s compute team spent the past year rapidly bringing new capacity online while building systems for compute, networking, storage and machine learning to train frontier models, including GPT-5.6.“We’re on a mission to build the world’s largest compute footprint,” he said in a LinkedIn post, adding that the company has a major infrastructure expansion roadmap ahead.Ruddarraju joined OpenAI in July last year as head of compute and infrastructure. Previously, he led infrastructure engineering at xAI and X. He also spent nearly six years at Robinhood and more than five years at eBay.He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Hyderabad’s Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology and a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota.
