Nagpur: Nearly one in every three people killed in road accidents in Nagpur over the last 32 months has been a pedestrian, even as the city has recorded a significant decline in overall road fatalities this year.Traffic police data shows that 776 people were killed in 3,129 road accidents between January 2024 and August 2026. Of these, 247 were pedestrians, accounting for around 32% of all fatalities. On average, nearly eight pedestrians lost their lives every month during the period.The trend has remained consistently high. In 2024, 110 pedestrians were killed among 353 road accident fatalities, accounting for 31.2% of all deaths. In 2025, 88 of the 259 people killed were pedestrians, taking their share to 34%.The situation remains worrying this year. As many as 49 pedestrians have been killed in the first eight months of 2026, accounting for 29.9% of the 164 fatalities recorded till August.The pedestrian deaths have come even as overall road safety indicators have improved. The city recorded 701 accidents till August this year, down 15.1% from 826 during the corresponding period of 2025. Fatal accidents declined by 21.7%, from 198 to 155, while deaths fell by 21.9%, from 210 to 164. The number of injured also dropped 11.2%, from 752 to 668.This was because of multiple drives and checks by the traffic police, under DCP (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar.The issue of pedestrian safety has come into focus following the recent death of a morning walker in the Seminary Hills area after he was knocked down by a speeding car. Earlier, on August 20, a five-year-old girl was run over by a speeding car in the Ajni area.
