T’puram: The district supply department has intensified surveillance across the city during the Onam season to check overpricing, non-display of price lists and illegal use of domestic LPG cylinders by commercial establishments. Officials said inspections would be stepped up in the coming days as consumer activity increases ahead of the festival.As part of the ongoing enforcement drive, a special inspection was conducted at various commercial establishments around Peroorkada Junction under the leadership of district supply officer Smitha S R. A total of 29 establishments were inspected during the drive.Four establishments where violations were detected will face action, with officials recommending the issuance of notices and imposition of fines. A report has also been submitted recommending the closure of one establishment and further action, including a penalty.Officials collected 24 samples during the inspection for further examination. Two domestic LPG cylinders that were allegedly being used illegally at a hotel for commercial purposes were also seized.The department has also submitted a report to the district collector seeking further action against establishments that failed to display mandatory price lists. Officials said displaying prices prominently was essential to prevent consumers from being charged excessive rates during the festival season.The enforcement drive assumes significance as demand for essential commodities and services rises during Onam, when traders and commercial establishments witness a surge in business. Officials said establishments found exploiting the seasonal rush to overcharge consumers would face action.The district supply officer said inspections would continue vigorously during the Onam period and that teams would conduct checks at commercial establishments to detect violations. The department will particularly focus on overpricing, failure to display price lists and the misuse of subsidised domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes.Taluk supply officers Baiju V and Rajalakshmi and Vattiyoorkavu circle food safety officer Dr Praveen R P also participated in the inspection.
