New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday handed over cheques of ₹5 lakh each to the bereaved families of five women who had died of complications after cesarean deliveries in Kota hospitals in May.

Birla, who is also the MP from Kota, said, “We are deeply saddened by their loss.” He assured the families that the state would support them. “Their children will be enrolled under the state’s Palanhaar Yojana, a scheme that provides monthly financial aid for the care of orphaned or vulnerable children in addition to other government welfare benefits,” he said, adding that family members would receive long-term socio-economic support, not just a one-time payout.

ET had earlier reported on the Kota deaths that were allegedly due to spurious oxytocin injections administered to the women.

A high-level probe has already been ordered into the incident. The licence of Punjab-based Jackson Laboratories that manufactured the oxytocin vials has been cancelled.
