Thiruvananthapuram: A third-year nursing student died on Sunday after allegedly jumping off a private nursing college building at Karungal near Marthandam in Tamil Nadu. Her family alleged sustained mental harassment by the college management and teachers for taking a mobile phone to the college.A Ansiji, 21, daugher of B Anil, a native of Kathipara in Neyyattinkara, reportedly jumped from the college building at Karungal in Kanyakumari district on Friday. She suffered serious injuries to her limbs and other parts of her body.She was initially rushed to a private hospital in Neyyattinkara in critical condition. She was later shifted to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, where she succumbed on Sunday morning while undergoing treatment. Her body was later shifted to the mortuary of Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital for postmortem. Karungal police registered a case based on the family’s complaint and began an investigation.The family alleged that Ansiji and other students had earlier protested against poor-quality food being served at the college hostel. The students, who participated in the agitation, were later allegedly removed from the hostel and were forced to stay in private accommodation outside the campus.As per the complaint by Ansiji’s parents to Karungal police, the students continued to face harassment and mental pressure from teachers and the management even after shifting out of the hostel. She didn’t bring her mobile phone to college on the day of the incident, but the college authorities falsely accused her, the complaint said. The family has demanded a detailed investigation into the circumstances leading to her death and sought action against the college principal and management. The girl’s father also alleged that someone might have killed her.The college management, however, denied the allegations. Officials had only checked the student’s mobile phone after she allegedly brought it to the college in violation of the rules, they said. The management maintained that the other allegations were baseless.
