Kullu: In the wake of a spate of trekking accidents, missing person cases and rescue operations in the Dhauladhar range, the Kangra administration has made registration mandatory for trekkers on 10 high-altitude routes.The district administration warned that those violating the rules could be made to bear the cost of their rescue.The order, issued by Hemraj Bairwa, district magistrate, Kangra, came into force with immediate effect and will remain valid until Oct 15, 2026.The treks identified by the administration, and situated between 3,600 and 4,600 metres, include Baleni, Minkiani, Bhim Ghasutri, Indrahar Pass, Kundli, Toral, Talang, Singhad, Waru and Jalsu Pass.Citing heightened risks during the monsoon, including landslides, flash floods, dense fog, poor visibility and slippery trails, the administration stated that trekkers often failed to share their travel plans or intended routes, making search and rescue operations lengthy, challenging and resource-intensive, while also putting rescue personnel at risk.Under the new guidelines, every trekker or trekking group heading to the identified routes must register in person at designated disaster management checkposts before starting their journey. They will also be required to submit their itinerary, contact details and expected time of return. The checkposts will function daily from 5 am to 5 pm.According to the administration, if trekkers enter these routes without registering, deviate from their declared route without informing the authorities, and subsequently require rescue, the administration may deploy private rescue teams and charge the full cost of the operation to the individual or group.The statement also warned of strict legal action against violators under Section 51 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and relevant provisions of the BNS.MSID:: 132263511 413 |
