Nominated Rajya Sabha MP Harivansh is all set to be elected as deputy chairman for the third consecutive time. The Rajya Sabha secretariat received only one notice of motion for Harivansh for the deputy chairman election by the stipulated deadline of 12.00 noon on Thursday.

For the election of deputy chairman, any Rajya Sabha MP can submit a motion proposing the name of a colleague for the post. The member whose name is being proposed needs to sign a declaration that he is willing to serve as deputy chairman if elected. The motion needs to be seconded by another MP of the Upper House.

On Friday, the motion for Harivansh as deputy chairman will be moved by leader of Opposition JP Nadda and seconded by another BJP MP S Phangnon Konyak. The motion will be adopted by a voice vote, and chairman CP Radhakrishnan will declare that Harivansh has been chosen as the deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
OPPOSITION CITES three Reasons for Boycott

The Opposition has decided to boycott the election. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, mentioned three reasons for the boycott. He said the Modi government has not appointed a Deputy Speaker in the Lok Sabha for the past seven years. Secondly, he said that never before has a nominated Rajya Sabha member been considered for the deputy chairman’s post. Finally, he said no consultation with the Opposition has taken place. “For these three reasons and as a mark of protest, but not with any disrespect to the very learned Harivansh, the Opposition has regretfully decided to boycott the election of the deputy chairman scheduled for April 17,” Ramesh wrote on X.
