Exercise caution before you click on any link or open attachments.Kendu Leaf Workers’ Union Announces Statewide Agitation from March 17Sambalpur/Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Kendu Patra Karmachari Sangha has announced a statewide agitation beginning March 17, raising a series of demands related to wages, job security and welfare benefits of kendu leaf workers across Odisha.In a memorandum issued by the union, it alleged that despite repeated appeals, several long-pending demands of kendu leaf pluckers, binders and seasonal staff have not been addressed adequately by the government. The union stated that workers engaged in the kendu leaf collection process are facing financial hardship due to low remuneration and irregular payments.Among the key demands highlighted are an increase in procurement price of kendu leaves, timely disbursement of wages, enhancement of bonus, and implementation of social security measures including provident fund and pension benefits. The Sangha has also sought better working conditions at phadis (collection centers), provision of permanent watcher posts, and allocation of revolving funds through OFDC for smooth operations.The union further demanded proper implementation of welfare schemes, medical assistance for workers, and financial support in case of accidental death during work. It urged the state government to initiate immediate discussions to resolve the issues.Leaders of the Sangha warned that if their demands are not fulfilled, they will intensify the agitation in the coming days. The organization has called upon workers across multiple districts to participate in the protest to press for their rights.
