Thiruvananthapuram: Devotees will not be permitted to light hearths for Attukal Pongala on the granite-paved areas surrounding the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, authorities have clarified, citing preservation and safety concerns following recent infrastructure upgrades carried out under the Central and state govts’ Swadesh Darshan Scheme. According to the temple’s executive officer, approach roads and entrances (nadakal) around the shrine were recently renovated with high-quality granite blocks laid in a traditional style as part of the development works. The official said the tones require careful upkeep to maintain their finish and durability.“Lighting makeshift stoves directly on the newly laid granite could cause blackening of the surface, cracks due to intense heat and permanent damage to the temple surroundings,” he said. He added that underground cables and safety systems installed as part of the project could also be affected by prolonged exposure to heat, potentially leading to malfunction or fire hazards.Temple advisory committee member Karamana Jayan said the restriction is not new. “This has been implemented over the past few years to ensure the premises remain clean and well-maintained after the modifications carried out under the Swadesh Darshan project,” he said, urging devotees to cooperate with authorities and use designated areas identified for the ritual. At Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, the Swadesh Darshan works included paving, improved lighting and underground utility installations to enhance safety and visitor experience. With lakhs of devotees expected to take part in the upcoming Attukal Pongala festival, authorities reiterated that safeguarding heritage structures and newly created infrastructure is a shared responsibility. Clear guidelines will be issued in advance to ensure the smooth conduct of the ritual without compromising preservation efforts.
