Nagpur: Fearing disruption to the city’s waste collection services following new restrictions on diesel sales, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has sought permission from the district administration to supply fuel through Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO)-approved bowsers and barrels and identified three fuel stations to meet the requirement of its garbage collection contractors.According to civic records, Antony Waste Handling requires nearly 3,500 litres HSD daily for its operations, while BVG India consumes around 2,700 litres. The combined requirement of 6,200 litres has prompted the civic body to seek an exemption mechanism to ensure uninterrupted fuel availability.In a letter addressed to district collector Kumar Ashirwad on Thursday, municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar requested that Pal Petroleum at Pardi Naka and AR Plaza at Lakadganj be allowed to supply diesel to vehicles operated by AG Enviro, which has since merged with Antony Waste Handling Cell, while Swaminarayan Petroleum at Wathoda cater to the fleet of BVG India Ltd.The move comes in the wake of a June 11 notification issued by the Union ministry of petroleum and natural gas restricting retail outlets from selling more than 200 litres of high speed diesel (HSD) to a customer or vehicle in a single day. The notification also stipulates that diesel can only be dispensed directly into vehicle tanks or PESO-approved containers.NMC officials fear the restrictions could affect the functioning of the city’s solid waste management system, an essential service that depends on uninterrupted fuel supplies for its fleet.AG Enviro caters to households in Laxmi Nagar, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, Dhantoli and Nehru Nagar zones, while BVG India handles waste collection in Gandhibagh, Satranjipura, Lakadganj, Ashi Nagar and Mangalwari zones. Together, the two agencies deploy 734 vehicles every day to collect garbage from across Nagpur and transport it to Bhandewadi dumping yard for further processing.Officials noted that both agencies have been carrying out door-to-door waste collection and transportation since November 16, 2019, under contractual obligations. Any disruption in diesel supply, they warned, could stall garbage lifting operations in the city, resulting in uncollected waste piling up in residential localities and posing a threat to public health, particularly during the monsoon season.Solid waste management department has maintained that ensuring a steady supply of diesel is critical to sustaining daily sanitation services.
