Nagpur: Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) tax assessment and collection special committee has sought a 50% waiver on the penalty levied on property tax arrears for economically weaker sections and small plot owners. The panel has urged the civic administration to review its ongoing attachment warrant drive.In a representation to municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar, committee chairperson Sarita Kawre and eight other members said tax recovery is essential for NMC, but the drive should be carried out without burdening economically weaker citizens, daily-wage earners and residents of slum areas.The committee said several property owners on the city’s outskirts had allegedly not received demand bills for years but had been served attachment warrants in 2026 for accumulated arrears. It sought an independent verification of whether demand bills had been properly served and whether recovery action had been initiated in previous years.The panel also sought an inquiry into complaints of alleged unauthorised settlements of large arrears for smaller amounts in attachment warrant cases. It asked NMC to provide clear details of dues and applicable instalment/payment options before issuing warrants and taking coercive action such as disconnection of water and sewer connections.The committee stressed that the principal tax arrears should not be waived, but sought a time-bound 50% concession on penalties.
