Nagpur: As many as 155 hospitals and healthcare establishments in Nagpur were penalised for improper disposal of syringes, contaminated dressings and other bio-medical waste, with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) nuisance detection squad (NDS) collecting ₹25.69 lakh in fines between Jan 1, 2023, and May 31, 2026, RTI records show.The action covered all 10 NMC zones, according to information obtained by RTI activist Abhay Kolarkar.Dharampeth accounted for the highest number of violations, with 51 cases — nearly one-third of the citywide total — attracting fines of ₹9.65 lakh. Lakadganj followed with 25 cases and penalties of ₹3 lakh.Hanuman Nagar recorded 17 cases involving fines of ₹2.59 lakh, while 16 establishments in Mangalwari were fined ₹2.45 lakh. Laxmi Nagar reported only eight violations but attracted penalties of ₹2.95 lakh — the second-highest amount after Dharampeth.Nehru Nagar and Gandhibagh recorded 12 cases each, with penalties of ₹1.45 lakh and ₹1.4 lakh, respectively, while eight establishments in Dhantoli were fined ₹1.4 lakh. Ashi Nagar recorded five cases with fines of ₹65,000. Satranjipura reported the least action, with just one case and a penalty of ₹15,000.NMC data show bio-medical waste generation increased from 1,632.061 tonnes in 2023 to 1,862.944 tonnes in 2024 — a rise of 230.883 tonnes. Between January and October 2025, healthcare establishments generated 1,574.588 tonnes, while another 930.952 tonnes was generated between January and June 2026.The records state that bio-medical waste is collected and transported by an MPCB-authorised agency to the common treatment facility at Bhandewadi. The contractor pays the civic body an annual royalty of ₹41.63 lakh.In all, healthcare establishments across the city generated 6,000.545 tonnes of bio-medical waste between January 2023 and June 2026. For every reporting period, the quantity generated matched the quantity collected, with NMC claiming 100% collection and disposal through an MPCB-authorised agency.The records also show that 3.32 lakh kg of recyclable plastic waste was processed in 2023, compared with 3.20 lakh kg in 2024. NMC stated that all hospitals and medical practitioners within its jurisdiction are members of the common bio-medical waste treatment facility.
