Lucknow: Prof Soniya Nityanand became the first vice-chancellor of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) to be appointed for a second consecutive term.
UP Governor and KGMU chancellor Anandiben Patel on Sunday approved the appointment under Section 16(1) of King George’s Medical University Act, 2002. The order was issued from Jan Bhavan on Aug 9. According to the order, Prof Nityanand’s new tenure will begin from the date she assumes charge.
An alumna of KGMU, Prof Nityanand completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies here. . She briefly served as an assistant professor in the department of immunology before joining Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), where she later headed a department.
In 2021, she was appointed director of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences.
Prof Nityanand is the second woman VC of KGMU. Prof Saroj Chooramani Gopal was the first woman to hold the post, serving from March 2008 to Feb 2011. Before KGMU became a university, Prof P K Mishra was the first woman head of the then King George’s Medical College from 1992 to 1998.
