Amritsar: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Feb 26 issued a notice to the Punjab govt and Amritsar municipal corporation (MC) over deteriorating sanitation and dilapidated sewerage in the city, said BJP functionary and former IAS officer Jagmohan Singh Raju on Saturday. He added the two had been asked to file the reply at least a week before the next hearing on March 17. Raju claimed that the order was issued based on a complaint he filed with the NGT and that since resigning from his job four years ago, he had observed the deterioration of the city’s sanitation and sewerage. He claimed that the Amritsar MC spent crores of rupees annually and those in power were doing better, but the reality was contrary.
Raju, who is BJP Punjab general secretary and in-charge of Amritsar East constituency, said Amritsar is a holy and tourist city, with over 10 lakh people visiting it daily, but heaps of garbage lay everywhere, sewerage was clogged, and even streets and homes were littered with filth are unfortunate.Completely rejecting Amritsar’s improvement in the Swachh Bharat Survey, he said in 2017, the city was ranked 200th in the country, but today it had slipped to between 800 and 900, which raised questions about the functioning of the govt and municipal corporation.
