Nagpur: The number of roads proposed to be concretised under Phase V of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) project has increased from 135 to 265 following submissions by corporators and MLAs from across the city.The project was initially estimated to cost 900 crore for 89.22km of roads. Sources said NMC is yet to revise the financial requirement and road length after the addition of 130 roads.Initial list of 135 tar roads primarily comprised stretches left out of Phase IV, along with proposals received from CM Devendra Fadnavis, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, MLAs Mohan Mate, Krishna Khopde and other representatives.After the proposal was placed before general body, elected representatives submitted additional lists of roads, covering all 10 NMC zones, major corridors, residential layouts, internal roads and stretches connecting important public institutions.The proposed roads include Ajni Square to Sawarkar Square, Ring Road to Patil Classes in Vivekananda Nagar, Shiv Mandir in Khamla to Gautam Nagar, Wardha Road T-Point to Congress Nagar Chowk and Ravi Nagar Square to Mother Dairy. Several stretches in Dharampeth, Ram Nagar, Sadar, Manewada, Hudkeshwar and East Wardhaman Nagar have also been included.While MLAs, corporators and NMC departments have proposed a number of roads, several others are marked as proposals from Phase IV.The civic body has already implemented four phases of its cement concrete road programme. According to the submitted project details, the four phases together had a sanctioned project cost of more than 1,026 crore. The works covered 30 roads in Phase I, 59 roads in Phase II, 40 roads in Phase III and 33 roads in Phase IV.The expansion of Phase V raises questions about the final project cost, total road length and prioritisation. “NMC is yet to decide whether all 265 roads will be taken up together or whether the list will be scrutinised and phased according to traffic requirements, road condition, utility works and available funds,” sources said.The civic body has submitted a proposal for seeking funds from state govt on the basis of its previous estimation of 135 roads. With cement concrete roads requiring substantial investment, NMC will have to assess the technical feasibility, underground utility requirements and financial implications before finalising the Phase V list.
