Mumbai: The NCP, which is a constituent of the Mahayuti government, has distanced itself from the remarks of its MLA Sana Malik on the issue of triple talaq during the ongoing monsoon session of the state assembly. In a discussion on the issue of forcible triple talaq in the state assembly initiated by BJP MLA Devayani Farande, Malik had said that the Centre had banned only instant triple talaq which is not a widely followed practice in the community. She said she supported the stand against forcible triple talaq. She also said that polygamy was allowed in the Muslim community but also asked whether it was not witnessed among other communities. In a response on X, NCP state president Sunil Tatkare said, “The statement made by Sana Malik on the issue of talaq in the state assembly is her personal view. The party does not agree with her view.”He added that the NCP strongly supported women’s rights, keeping religion aside. “The party is of the view that no woman should face a dangling sword of a one-sided end to marriage. Our party believes in the Constitution and the ideology of reformers Shahu, Phule and Ambedkar.”He also said that for the party, the SC’s decision on triple talaq and the law made by Parliament was supreme. Everyone should follow this, he said.“MLA Sana Malik has the freedom to speak in keeping with the Constitution. This was her personal view,” said Tatkare on X.
