Surat: New Civil Hospital (NCH) has launched electroencephalography (EEG) diagnostic services to strengthen neurological care and improve access to essential tests. The facility is now operational, enabling patients to receive timely diagnosis for brain and nervous system disorders without having to travel outside the city for testing.Under the new facility, patients can undergo both EEG and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) tests free of cost. According to a hospital official, an EEG test typically costs up to Rs 5,000 at private hospitals, while an NCV test can cost up to Rs 4,000.EEG is a diagnostic procedure that records the brain’s electrical activity through electrodes placed on the scalp. It helps doctors evaluate conditions such as seizures, episodes of unconsciousness, sleep-related disorders and serious brain injuries.NCV testing, meanwhile, measures the speed and efficiency with which electrical signals travel through nerves. The test helps diagnose a range of nerve-related conditions, including neuropathy, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and carpal tunnel syndrome. It also assists doctors in identifying and distinguishing different types of nerve damage. The introduction of these services at NCH is expected to ease the financial burden on patients and improve access to specialised diagnostic care.
