Srinagar, Mar 11: The women’s wing of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to empowering women in governance, politics and public service.

Addressing a provincial meeting of the party’s women’s wing at Nawa-e-Subha, the wing’s state president Shameema Firdous said women’s participation in decision-making was central to the party’s vision of inclusive and progressive leadership.

The meeting was organised by Provincial President Sabiya Qadri and was attended by several party leaders and office bearers.

Firdous said providing women meaningful roles in politics and governance was essential for building a democratic and equitable society.

“Granting women powerful positions in politics and public service is not just about representation but about ensuring their role in shaping policies and governance,” she said.

She highlighted measures such as 33 percent reservation for women in urban local bodies and Panchayati Raj institutions, saying these initiatives have helped open doors for women to participate in grassroots leadership.

Firdous also said the National Conference had played a pioneering role in promoting women’s representation in education, including reserving 50 percent seats for girls in government medical colleges.

Among those present at the meeting were Provincial President Kashmir Showkat Mir, MLA Lal Chowk Ahsan Pardesi, party spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar and other district and provincial leaders of the party.

Speakers at the meeting stressed the need to further strengthen women’s participation in political processes and public institutions in Jammu and Kashmir.
