Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday claimed that inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, who has been indicted by the United States law enforcement authorities for links with gangsters, was hand in glove with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and demanded an independent probe to uncover who was sheltering the tainted officer.SAD chief spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler said Nagra earlier “created history” by registering a case against an AAP opponent for committing sacrilege against the party’s symbol — the broom.“This is the level Nagra stooped to please his political masters. It is obvious that in a quid pro quo, he was allowed a free hand to do as he pleased, and he went on to extort money from a US-based Punjab family,” said Kler.“Since Nagra was running an extortion racket, it needs to be ascertained who provided him political shelter and whether the cop shared the proceeds of the crime with his political masters,” he added.Terming the FBI indictment a reflection of the AAP rule in Punjab, Kler said, “The very fact that the police inspector was working hand in glove with dreaded gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria shows there is more than meets the eye.”He claimed that the AAP govt facilitated Jaggu Bhagwanpuria’s transfer from a jail in Assam to Punjab and used him to intimidate political rivals in the Tarn Taran byelection. “The AAP govt also helped Bhagwanpuria by declining to grant sanction to prosecute him in a UAPA case.”Alleging that all this pointed to a possible wider alliance between police officers, criminals and AAP functionaries, the SAD spokesperson said the same could only be exposed by an independent probe into the case.MSID:: 132480764 413 |
