Mangaluru: As rescue operations wound up at Nagori after a landslip triggered a retaining wall collapse that killed three people, concerns have emerged over survivors who have lost everything. The state govt has announced Rs 5 lakh ex gratia for families of the deceased, but uncertainty persists over compensation for tenants who lost their belongings. Under existing norms, compensation for property damage is paid to the house owner, leaving tenants dependent on discretionary relief despite heavy losses. The issue echoes past disasters in the district. The Manjanady landslide on May 30 last year claimed three lives from a single family, while another survivor, Ashwini, underwent amputation of both legs after severe injuries. While compensation was provided to families of the deceased, Ashwini relied on charitable support for prosthetic limbs.Tenants at Nagori now face a similar situation. Jayaram, a pickup driver from Uppinangady, who has lived with his wife and two children in one of the four houses for 13 years, lost almost all household belongings though the family escaped unhurt.“Everything inside the house was lost, the refrigerator, almirah, cot, furniture, clothes and other household items. Since we are tenants, we have only been assured rent assistance for a few months. We are now staying in another vacant house in the locality,” Jayaram said. The bodies of the three victims were cremated on Thursday. Of three survivors, Balakrishna, 48, a native of Kaup in Udupi district, sustained serious injuries, while Alka, 14, and Anusha, 11, are recovering in hospital.More than a year after the Manjanady tragedy, Ashwini received Rs 23 lakh from the Lodha Charitable Trust for prosthetic leg implantation.Former MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said Maharashtra minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha extended the support through the trust following requests from BJP and RSS leaders.Responding to concerns, an official said minister UT Khader has directed the district administration to provide Rs 10,000 per month towards rent for at least two months. The official said compensation has been released in accordance with govt norms in previous disaster cases.Compensation to ownerAs per the norms, Rs 1.2 lakh can be sanctioned to the house owner if the house is damaged completely. “The compensation will be released after verifying the documents and spot inspection reports prepared by engineers. The amount will be released to the owner of the house in Nagori. As per the NDRF norms, compensation can be given for the loss of tenants, said additional deputy commissioner Raju K.
