Pranavi Urs celebrates during thewomen’s individual stroke play medal ceremony

Mysuru: From taking her first swings at the Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Golf Club (JWGC) in the foothills of Chamundi Hills at the age of six to winning a historic medal at the Asian Games, 22-year-old Mysuru golfer Pranavi Urs has scripted a remarkable journey that has brought pride to Mysuru, Karnataka and the nation.JWGC president Arunkumar said Pranavi’s success was a moment of immense pride for the club and a shining example of how sustained grassroots support can nurture sporting talent. He described her as a “home-grown prodigy” who emerged from the club’s Junior Golf Development Programme and went on to establish herself on the international professional circuit.The foundation for Pranavi’s journey was laid under an initiative introduced by former JWGC president Ryan Irani, who launched structured grassroots training for young golfers. The club conducts junior coaching camps three times a year and identifies promising talent through school outreach programmes and other initiatives.Selected youngsters are provided year-round support, including free coaching, practice balls and access to club facilities. Pranavi was among those who received dedicated practice facilities, customised training schedules and financial assistance for transportation during her formative years.Arunkumar said Pranavi’s exceptional mental strength, aggressive approach on the course and calm temperament have been key factors in her success. Her steady progress on the Ladies European Tour and Asian professional circuits, coupled with exposure to international courses and playing conditions, further strengthened her game.Her Asian Games medal, he said, marks a proud milestone in a journey that began on the greens of JWGC.Pranavi is the daughter of businessman Sharathchandra Raj Urs and entrepreneur Kaivalya Urs. She completed her schooling at NPS Mysuru and is currently pursuing a BA degree through Karnataka State Open University (KSOU).Pranavi’s father, Sharathchandra Raj Urs, who first inspired her interest in golf, said that although she had aimed for gold in both the individual and team events at the Asian Games, her individual silver medal brought immense joy to the family. He credited her success to 15 years of dedicated practice, consistent performances from a young age and her strong form on the Ladies European Tour over the past three years.He added that Pranavi is now focused on qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Games.According to Srikanth Raj Urs, president of Ursu Mandali, Pranavi has been passionate about golf since childhood. He noted that her grandfather and grandmother were national-level athletes, contributing to a strong sporting legacy in the family.
