MOHALI: Justice was served in a murder case, thanks to a pet dog, with a court in Punjab’s Mohali sentencing a man to life imprisonment for killing his friend over Rs 40,000 in 2021. Two other suspects were acquitted for lack of evidence.Additional district and sessions judge Vikrant Kumar convicted Jagir Singh alias Ghola on July 17 for the murder of Sucha Singh. Court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh and directed that the compensation be awarded to the victim’s wife.

According to prosecution, Jagir and Sucha were drinking together in Siswan on June 12, 2021, when an argument broke out over a Rs 40,000 dispute arising from the sale and purchase of goats. In a fit of rage, Jagir cut off Sucha’s head with a sword.To conceal the crime, Jagir buried Sucha’s body and head at separate locations after killing him over a monetary dispute. Sucha’s family looked for him for over a week. During this desperate search, they were intrigued by the behaviour of the family pet, Rocky.It would repeatedly go to a spot and sit down. This was only a few feet from the wellguarded Siswan farmhouse of the then CM Capt Amarinder Singh.Police dug the site and exhumed the headless body. The investigation led to Jagir and two other suspects. Deputy district attorney, Hardeep Singh Rumana, said Jagir was sentenced to life imprisonment.He added court acquitted two co-accused, Satnam Singh alias Sunny and Desraj alias Desa, as there was insufficient evidence against them.
