Violence on Jadavpur University campus on Wednesday night

Kolkata: Police have registered a case under stringent, non-bailable sections, including attempt to murder and the SC/ST Act, against 11 Jadavpur University students for allegedly assaulting fellow students. Cops confirmed that all accused are students and said those named in the FIR are Left outfit members.According to a complaint filed by Aritra Sarkar (BE, CSE, 3rd year, from Murshidabad), the accused assaulted at least two ABVP supporters in a manner “that it had become life-threatening and required immediate hospitalisation”.The complaint invokes BNS sections 191(2), 190, 117(2), 109, 197(1)(d) and 353(1), read with Section 3(1)(r)(s) of the SC/ST Act. No complaint has yet been received from the other side.Sarkar said a general body (GB) meeting was organised by students affiliated with the FETSU around 9 pm at Aurbindo Bhawan on campus. “During the meeting, Left-wing supporters reportedly attempted to constitute the union unilaterally. This move was opposed by ABVP supporters, namely Diptiman Kar and Nikhil Das (president of ABVP unit). Following this opposition, a physical altercation reportedly occurred between the two groups of students,” Sarkar told cops. Nikhil and Diptiman were taken to KPC Hospital.Police said they received the complaint around midnight after Jadavpur’s BJP MLA Sarbari Mukherjee and supporters arrived at Jadavpur Police Station with Sarkar. No formal complaint from the opposite camp was yet to be filed, said cops.Police said Dial 100 had reported a ruckus, following which a team entered the campus, removed outsiders and found posters torn and burned outside Aurobindo Bhawan. Around 50 people were inside, refusing to leave. No suo motu FIR has been registered.SFI and AIDSO claimed one accused described as “injured” had a past criminal record linked to the Hok Kolorob movement. ABVP said he had received a clean chit and threatened legal action. No notice has been served or detentions made. “The legal process for questioning, though, has been initiated,” said an officer.
