Shillong: Leader of opposition in the Meghalaya assembly and former chief minister Mukul M Sangma on Tuesday lodged an FIR against former MLA Estamur Mominin for making allegations against him and promoting “disharmony among groups” ahead of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections. In his FIR filed at Phulbari Police Station in West Garo Hills district, Sangma said on the evening of March 9, a video was circulated showing Mominin addressing a gathering after allegedly being assaulted earlier that day at the DC’s office in Tura, where he had gone to file his nomination.
“That, the contents of the above mentioned individual’s speech contains vitriolic election rhetoric, as you are well aware considering the tense atmosphere regarding the participation of certain group of individuals, in particular non-tribals in the district council elections,” the FIR said.“The speech may have unwittingly or intentionally been given to provoke certain groups and promote disharmony amongst groups,” Sangma wrote. He said such claims amount to spreading rumours likely to sow discord, incite hatred, and potentially trigger offenses between communities. Sangma also requested legal action under Sections 192/196/353/57 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other applicable laws.
