Nagpur: In a major technological upgrade aimed at improving power reliability and service quality, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has launched a state-wide Substation Monitoring System (SMS) that enabled real-time digital surveillance of substations and faster response to faults. The new system, described as a ‘digital eye’ on substations, is expected to transform how power disruptions are detected and resolved across the state. Announcing the initiative, MSEDCL director (operations/projects) Sachin Talewar said the technology would make the distribution network more transparent, efficient and consumer friendly.Speaking at AB Kottewar Memorial Lecture organised by Institution of Engineers, Talewar explained how the system enhances network visibility, operational efficiency.Developed indigenously at a relatively low cost, the SMS allows officials at the central control room to track electricity flow, voltage levels and equipment status at substations across the state in real time. This continuous monitoring is expected to significantly reduce the time taken to detect and address technical faults. With the new system in place, the control room can instantly pinpoint the source of a problem, enabling maintenance teams to respond quickly, restore supply faster. In case of feeder-level faults, consumers will receive SMS alerts on their registered mobile numbers. With thousands of agricultural feeders now being solarised, real-time monitoring will ensure stable daytime supply.
