In early January of 2025, Mother was preparing to debut its first-ever store in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. But just days before it was set to open, one of the most destructive fires in L.A. history leveled the area, burning 23,448 acres and destroying 6,837 structures. Obviously, the store was put on pause. Now, 19 months later, the 15-year-old, L.A.-based brand finally has its first brick-and-mortar, this time on N. Canon Drive in Beverly Hills.
“We were obviously upset and disappointed,” Co-Founder Lela Becker tells Fashionista of the fire. “But because of the level of devastation, we were just like, ‘We’re one little dot amongst everything.’ So, we just sort of left it behind us and moved on because there’s nothing you can do.”

There was never a plan to be in Beverly Hills, Becker says, but it ended up working out perfectly with the same concept and build of the original store. The 3,850-square-foot space is part California living room, part social clubhouse and part “cabinet of curiosities,” per the brand. (More on that later.) It was designed by L.A.-based firm Mahte (with Fernanda Tarr overseeing the architecture) and features a rich color palette with warm terracottas, deep reds and soft dusty pinks, which helps the shopping experience feel immersive as you walk through. Sculptural curved architecture was inspired by vintage design.
“[We] created what we feel at the office and even through the visuals of our website, and [brought] that to the customer,” Becker says of the store they call “The Motherland.” Although the brand might be best known for its denim, Becker wants customers to get the full Mother experience and see how far it has expanded — into ready-to-wear, bags, accessories, knits, sweats and more — while still keeping more than 90% of manufacturing in L.A.

But one of her favorite parts of the new store actually has little to do with these product categories: It’s the rotating installation she calls “Cabinet of Curiosities,” featuring “objects, artifacts, ephemera and personal inspirations drawn from Mother’s evolving collection themes and creative references,” per the brand. The collection also includes pens and pencils, playing cards that resemble a pack of cigarettes, “Mother Beverly Hills” emblazoned flasks and lighters and more. Many items are exclusive to the Beverly Hills store, which also offers merch like sweats and tees.

Another standout area is the conversation pit designed to be a communal gathering space. It’s adjacent to the Mother Café, which offers coffee, tea and matcha, inspired by European rest stops. “The cafe was super important to us just as a gathering point,” Becker says. “Make yourself at home and be part of the Mother world. Read a magazine. Hang out.” Try on clothes in the boudoir-inspired fitting rooms.

While this store is Mother’s flagship, a Pacific Palisades location will happen next year in the just-reopened Palisades Village. The actual space is different and the design will be different, too. “Our idea for now is to do, [for] whatever neighborhood we’re in, what feels good for that area, but make it Mother,” Becker says. A New York City store is also in the works for 2027. “We want each one to feel curated and unique and special.”
