Nagpur: A 56-year-old woman suffering from breast and lung cancer and her 33-year-old son battling a brain tumour allegedly ended life by consuming poisonous substance at their flat at Shri Guru Mauli Apartment in Kotwali area. The deaths came to fore on Monday evening after a strong stench started emanating from the flat.The two were identified as Abhaya Khankhoje, 56, and her son Advait, 33. The two likely took the extreme step during the weekend, police said. Abhaya was a widow. Her husband was a railway employee.The cops recovered a suicide note, two bottles of poison and two mobile phones from the spot. Signs of vomiting were also noticed during the inspection.The Kotwali Police swung into action after receiving a call from neighbour Abhishek Kalamkar, 36, around 9.30pm on July 20. Kalamkar informed cops that the flat had remained locked for a few days.A police team led by senior PI Prashant Jhumde reached the spot and broke open the door. The bodies were found in the bedroom. A panchnama was conducted in the presence of witnesses. The Forensic Science Laboratory team was also called, and the suicide note along with poison bottles and mobiles were seized as evidence.Preliminary investigation revealed that Abhaya was battling advanced cancer while her son Advait was suffering from brain tumour. The family was reportedly under depression due to prolonged illness. The suicide note recovered from the scene pointed towards their decision to end lives, citing unbearable pain and suffering.The bodies were sent to Mayo Hospital for postmortem. Viscera and other samples collected during postmortem were sent to the Forensic Medical Laboratory.Kotwali Police registered a case of accidental death. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances, verify the authenticity of the suicide note and rule out any foul play.
