Surat: Varachha police on Wednesday afternoon arrested a 34-year-old woman for murder after her two-year-old daughter died, allegedly due to beatings.According to the complaint filed by the victim’s uncle, the woman had been married for nine years but recently left her husband in a village in Gir-Somnath district and began living with her partner. Five days ago, she shifted to a society in Varachha with her partner and her four daughters, aged seven, three, two and one. Her partner works as an artisan in a diamond unit.Police said the victim, the third of the four children, was a playful child. On Wednesday, after having lunch, she asked for food again, after which the woman allegedly beat her. The child later drank water, went to sleep and did not wake up. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.A postmortem examination revealed multiple injuries on the child’s body, with doctors noting that several were old, indicating prolonged abuse.Police inspector R B Gojiya said, “Preliminary investigation suggests the child was being subjected to repeated physical abuse. Further investigation is underway.”
