Hyderabad: Rain returned to parts of Hyderabad on Saturday evening, offering much-needed relief from the intense summer heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the city and several parts of Telangana are likely to receive more showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds in the coming days, as conditions become favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into the state.The IMD’s Hyderabad office issued a series of district-level nowcasts (weather forecasting on a very short term) throughout the day. Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Mahabubnagar and Vikarabad districts were placed under an orange alert at different points for moderate rain and thunderstorms, while yellow alerts for light rain and thunderstorms were issued for several other districts, including Medchal-Malkajgiri, Sangareddy, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Nalgonda, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nirmal, Rajanna Sircilla, Narayanpet and Warangal. The latest nowcast also predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers over a few parts of the GHMC area.According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has further advanced into the Arabian Sea, and over Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and the Bay of Bengal. Conditions are favourable for its further advancement into Telangana over the next two to three days. “A trough extending from the upper air cyclonic circulation over Jharkhand to Telangana across Chhattisgarh is also influencing weather conditions over the region,” the department stated.The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places across Telangana over the next seven days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph are likely over several districts, while heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in Nalgonda, Suryapet, Warangal, Hanumakonda and Nagarkurnool districts on Sunday. For Hyderabad, the forecast for the next 24 to 48 hours is partly cloudy skies with spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers, at times accompanied by gusty winds, particularly towards evening or night.The weather office has also predicted a gradual fall of 2°C to 3°C in maximum temperatures across the state over the next four days. On Saturday, Hyderabad recorded a maximum temperature of 38.8°C and a minimum of 26.6°C, while Khammam remained the hottest among the major stations at 42.4°C. The latest IMD observations showed Khammam received the highest rainfall in the previous 24 hours at 17.8 mm, followed by Nizamabad with 1.6 mm, even as fresh showers were reported from parts of Hyderabad during the evening. The rainfall and thunderstorm outlook issued by the IMD indicates widespread rain activity across Telangana over the next few days as the monsoon edges closer to the state.
