GURGAON: Heavy monsoon showers continued to disrupt normal life in Gurgaon on Wednesday, with the city recording 115mm of rainfall over the last 33 hours. The rain triggered widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion and several rain-related incidents across key stretches, news agency PTI reported.Traffic crawled on major roads, including the Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48) service lane near Narsinghpur, Basai, Kadipur and Sohna Road, leaving commuters stranded for hours. Several vehicles reportedly broke down after getting stuck in waterlogged stretches.According to official data, Gurgaon received 83mm of rainfall on Tuesday, followed by another 32mm on Wednesday, putting the city’s drainage network under severe strain.
Police step up deployment on NH-48
In response to the worsening traffic situation, Gurgaon Traffic Police deployed 260 additional personnel and equipment on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway to manage congestion and respond to emergencies.Deputy commissioner of police (Traffic) Prateek Gahlot said the deployment was aimed at strengthening traffic management during the monsoon, particularly in view of increased traffic volume and night-time movement. The additional resources include five cranes, two Hydra machines, an ambulance, 17 motorcycle patrol units and six police vehicles.Police teams have been stationed at vulnerable and high-traffic locations to clear bottlenecks and assist stranded motorists. Enhanced surveillance has also been put in place at major entry and exit points on NH-48.Gahlot said two-wheelers and three-wheelers would not be allowed to enter the highway from any entry point, and action would be taken against violators under the Motor Vehicles Act.“The Gurgaon Traffic Police is continuously monitoring the traffic situation. Police teams deployed in the field and at the control room are working in coordination to immediately clear any traffic congestion or obstruction,” he said.
Waterlogging, accidents add to commuters’ woes
Waterlogging was reported from several parts of the city, including Sectors 31 and 39, Sheetla Mata Mandir Road, Sector 10A, Pataudi Road, Basai Road, Kadipur and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk, PTI reported.Residents also reported several rain-related accidents.A cyclist fell into a pit dug for a sewer line in Feroze Gandhi Colony, while a cow was injured after slipping into another excavation pit. A school bus also got stuck on a dug-up stretch in Rajendra Park, locals said.
Civic body claims permanent drainage solutions underway
Municipal commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), Gurgaon Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), police and other agencies were jointly working to drain water and restore normalcy. He said the civic body had undertaken drainage improvement works before the monsoon to address chronic waterlogging.“Our objective is not merely to drain water during the rains but to provide a permanent solution to waterlogging issues through technical planning and a robust drainage network,” Dahiya said.He added that field teams had been directed to continuously monitor vulnerable locations and take immediate action wherever required. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall over the next few days.(With agency inputs)
