Mangaluru: DYFI Dakshina Kannada district unit members on Monday held a demonstration in the city, demanding a govt medical college for the district, upgradation of Wenlock District Hospital to a regional hospital, an end to the PPP model, and the establishment of taluk and community hospitals, and primary health centres according to the population. BK Imthiyaz, district president of DYFI, said: “There is no regulation on private hospitals, which charge different rates for the same medical procedures. People in the district are in a situation where they have to beg for help when they fall ill.” He urged the legislators to focus on public health issues, instead of traditional buffalo races. “The condition of govt hospitals in the district has deteriorated completely. There are no govt taluk hospitals in five taluks, including Mangaluru,” he claimed. DYFI district secretary Santhosh Bajal said had the British not established Wenlock Hospital and Lady Goschen hospitals, the district’s healthcare situation would have been unimaginable. A memorandum of demands was submitted to the health department.
