Udupi: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna, in a memorandum submitted to energy minister KJ George, urged the urgent upgrade of Mescom substations to resolve low-voltage issues and ensure an uninterrupted power supply across Udupi assembly constituency.Highlighting Udupi’s growth as a key district headquarters, the MLA noted rapid developments across education, healthcare, fisheries, industry, tourism, and religious sectors. Increased urbanisation, construction of new residential layouts and apartment complexes, and expanding commercial and industrial activities have continuously raised electricity demand in the region. Currently, residents in urban areas of Udupi and rural areas of Brahmavar are facing severe difficulties due to low voltage, frequent power interruptions, and excessive load on transformers, the MLA noted. To address these challenges and comprehensively strengthen the power infrastructure, the MLA emphasised key measures required. He demanded installing new transformers, enhancing the capacity of existing transformers, constructing new substations and upgrading active substations. Modernising old power lines and laying new cables and distribution lines and thereby providing a permanent solution to low-voltage issues and supplying power infrastructure to newly developing residential layouts are some of the measures the MLA sought. He also urged strengthening streetlights and high-mast lights at major roads and key junctions.Emphasising that uninterrupted quality power is essential for the district centre, MLA Suvarna urged the energy minister to urgently sanction special funds to Mescom, taking into account the current and long-term future electricity needs of the constituency, and to execute the necessary infrastructure works on priority.
