Aizawl: Piped cooking gas will be first implemented in Mamit and Aizawl districts, with the service expected to reach Mamit town by March-April 2027 and Sihhmui in Aizawl by March-April 2028, state food, civil supplies and consumer affairs minister B Lalchhanzova said on Monday.Lalchhanzova inspected the ongoing work on the 119.45-km Panisagar-Aizawl gas pipeline at Tuidam village in Mamit district, bordering Tripura. The pipeline is being constructed by Indradhanush Gas Grid Ltd (IGGL) under the Northeast Gas Grid project. He said global conflicts had disrupted fuel supplies and caused LPG shortages in Mizoram for certain periods. The Northeast Gas Grid project, involving an investment of around Rs 9,265 crore, aims to lay 1,656 km of gas pipelines across various northeastern states. He said IGGL is working to connect Mizoram with Tripura Natural Gas Company Ltd.Once connected to the gas grid, Mizoram will also be able to use compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles, Lalchhanzova said. He added that the project could reduce demand for liquid fuel and help address disruptions caused by LPG shortages. The minister urged IGGL officials to expedite the work and assured Mizoram residents of the state govt’s support. He also stressed the need for coordination among govt departments, the district administration and the local public to complete the project.During the inspection of the project in Mamit district, the minister noted that a 1.5-km stretch of the pipeline route requires widening at several spots. To ensure these adjustments do not disrupt existing road repair plans, officials from IGGL and the PWD held discussions on site to coordinate their operations. The 119.45-km pipeline will connect Tripura Natural Gas Company’s network with Aizawl. It will use a 12-inch-diameter pipe with a thickness of 7.14 mm and include six sectionalising valve stations, one dispatch terminal and one receiving terminal. The pipeline will run for 15.105 km across six villages in Tripura and 104.345 km across 20 villages in Mizoram.
