Chandigarh: Tourists travelling on the Unesco-listed Kalka-Shimla heritage railway have received a boost with the resumption of the regular mixed train service from July 16. The Ambala railway division has restored the daily up and down service after the conclusion of the Holiday Special train.The six-coach train departs from Kalka at 8am and reaches Shimla at 1.35pm. On the return journey, it leaves Shimla at 5pm and arrives in Kalka at 10.10pm.The restored service is expected to benefit monsoon tourists visiting Shimla, with the scenic heritage route remaining a major attraction despite a seasonal dip in tourist arrivals. The mixed train is the sixth daily train operating on the Kalka-Shimla section.What Is a Mixed Train?A mixed train carries both passengers and railway parcels or goods wagons when required. On the Kalka-Shimla heritage railway, it combines passenger travel with freight movement, making it an economical service while also serving local transportation needs on the narrow-gauge mountain route.
