Patna: Exploring the uneasy relationship between faith, power and truth, the award-winning Hindi play Mithyasur left theatre lovers in Patna reflecting on the forces that shape individual and collective belief. Thought-provoking play was staged at the House of Variety (HOV) on Sunday as part of the Shivendra Sinha National Theatre Festival.Written by Pranay Pandey, directed by Ajeet Singh Pallawat and presented by Mumbai-based Ujaagar Dramatic Association, Mithyasur explores the interplay of myth, power, truth and illusion, and the role of belief in shaping societies and systems of authority.Set in the 18th century, the story follows Mahapurohit Somdev, the head priest of an ancient temple, who begins receiving visions of the demon king Kumbh in his dreams. Troubled by these experiences, Somdev embarks on a quest for answers that gradually leads him to question the foundations of faith, authority and truth.The conflict deepens when he encounters a royal princess who believes in science and reason. Their contrasting worldviews provide a compelling framework for exploring the tension between belief and rationality, knowledge and ignorance.The play also examines the role of political and religious institutions in shaping collective beliefs and governance. It highlights the fragility of systems built on personal visions, interpretations and unquestioned faith.Rather than offering definitive answers, Mithyasur encourages audiences to look beyond inherited beliefs and critically examine the forces that shape their understanding of truth. The production underscores the importance of reason, awareness and the courage to question established narratives.According to the organisers, the play raises a broader question: Can critical thinking and conscious choices pave the way for a more just society?
