Bollywood star Mithun Chakraborty has built a remarkable career after facing severe financial struggles during his early years in Mumbai. The actor, who entered the film industry with limited means, eventually became one of the biggest stars of his generation.His debut film also earned him a National Award. Yet, Mithun Chakraborty’s early days were far removed from the comfortable life he leads today. The actor has spoken about sleeping on the streets and cleaning an office to gain access to its washroom. He had also once requested an interviewer to feed him. Today, Mithun Chakraborty owns several properties across India. Among his most distinctive residences is his sprawling bungalow at Madh Island in Mumbai. The property covers nearly 1.5 acres, which is around 65,000 sq ft.
In 1985, Mithun Chakraborty bought his Madh Island bungalow
The property has been part of Mithun Chakraborty’s family for several decades. His younger son, Namashi Chakraborty, recently spoke about the sprawling residence and its history during a conversation with Pinkvilla. “My parents bought this house in 1985, a few months after my elder brother Mimoh was born,” Namashi Chakraborty said. The family did not immediately make the Mumbai property their permanent home. They later moved to Ooty and continued living there until 2007. After returning to Mumbai, the family began staying at the Madh Island bungalow full-time. Before that transition, the property was primarily used as a holiday home. The sprawling premises now have plenty of greenery and space for the family’s 22 dogs. Gardening is also one of Mithun Chakraborty’s interests. “Dad loves gardening. He often keeps himself busy doing that,” Namashi Chakraborty said.
The property has separate cottages for family members
Rather than housing everyone inside a single structure, the bungalow has been divided into multiple cottages. Each one serves a specific purpose or provides space for different members of the family. “There are different cottages for different family members. Both my father and grandfather believed that every kid should have their own space,” Namashi Chakraborty explained. One cottage has been converted into a gym. Another is used to accommodate guests. The cottage opposite the guest area is used by Mithun Chakraborty and his wife whenever they are in Mumbai. Another cottage functions as an office. It is also where professional conversations related to the family’s film projects take place. “Dad mostly stays in Kolkata”, revealed Namashi Chakraborty. “All the film-related talks as well as script discussions happen in this office,” Namashi Chakraborty said.
Mithun Chakraborty’s office preserves his legacy
The office is more than just a workspace. It also contains several reminders of Mithun Chakraborty’s decades-long career in cinema. One wall displays his awards, along with paintings and sketches created by fans. Other sections feature photographs of Mithun Chakraborty with prominent personalities from different stages of his life. The collection includes pictures with Kannada cinema legend Rajkumar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bal Thackeray. There is also a photograph capturing Mithun Chakraborty receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The property has also hosted several celebrity gatherings over the years. Its courtyard reportedly became a celebration space during the family’s Diwali parties. Actors such as Dharmendra and Jeetendra have been among the guests at these celebrations.
Mithun Chakraborty’s sons have an in-house studio
The Madh Island residence has also evolved into a creative space for the next generation of the family. A separate cottage has been transformed into a full-fledged studio. Mithun Chakraborty’s sons use the facility for filmmaking activities. They can also create different sets within the property. The arrangement allows the family to conduct several film-related activities without leaving the sprawling premises.
Mithun Chakraborty’s yellow Beetle was once his ‘first home’
Among the most unusual objects associated with the property is a yellow Volkswagen Beetle. Namashi Chakraborty described the vehicle as his father’s first home in Mumbai. The car dates back to Mithun Chakraborty’s difficult early period. Although it is no longer fit to be driven, the actor continues to spend money on maintaining it. “When dad came to Mumbai, he didn’t have a house to live. He spent 15 days of his life in this yellow Beetle. This was his first house. Now, it is not in a condition to be driven, yet dad spends a lot of money in its maintenance,” Namashi revealed. Namashi did not disclose how Mithun Chakraborty gained access to the vehicle during those initial days.
